HOW CAN EXERCISE HELP AS WE MOVE INTO THE NEW COVID-NORMAL?

The COVID-19 pandemic means that many of us are staying at home and doing less in terms of social interactions and exercise. This will have a negative effect on your physical and mental health.

Movement is an essential part of everyday life, for people of all ages. It affects development, learning, communicating, work capacity, health, and quality of life for children and adults. Movement permits people to navigate and stay oriented within their environment. It allows people to interact more fully in their work and recreation. It is a defining element of quality of life.

Why is exercise important during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Regular exercise is essential for everyone under normal circumstances. However, here are a few reasons why exercise is especially crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • Exercise boosts the immune system: regular, moderate-intensity exercise has immune-boosting benefits that may help your body fight off infections, including COVID-19.
  • Exercise prevents weight gain: exercise can help you burn extra calories caused by dietary changes
  • Exercise reduces stress and anxiety: exercise is a proven mood-booster and can help adults reduce stress levels
  • Exercise improves sleep: regular exercise helps you fall asleep faster and improves sleep quality and getting a good night’s sleep has also been found to boost your immune system.

HOW TO EXERCISE IN A SAFE, COVID FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT

Get to the gym: research has shown that gyms are among the safest places to be. Gyms create a space where an individual to build their immune system to withstand and fight diseases. The Simbithi Gymnasium is close, clean and has all the applicable COVID-19 protocols in place for your safety. Don’t miss out on your daily dose of exercise.

Go solo outdoors: walking, cycling and running around Simbithi’s trails and roads during early mornings or late afternoons would be a great way to start or end your day and enjoying the benefits of sunshine, fresh outdoor air and the natural light makes exercise even more enjoyable.

Stay home with your biokineticist: Living pain free, healthy and strong are essential elements for great quality of life. Ensure that you are keeping up with your exercise by booking weekly sessions in the safety of your own home.

HOW TO RETURN TO EXERCISE FOLLOWING INFECTION OF COVID-19

Although the majority of patients who have contracted COVID-19 may have mild symptoms and recover, approximately 20% of infected patients require admission to intensive care unit (ICU) and many may also require oxygen. Patients specifically at risk are those who have a history of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

UP to 50% of COVID-19 patients may develop short to long-term complications including impaired physical strength, cognitive and memory decline and mental health disturbances. A goal-directed rehabilitation programme with patient specific exercises aims to reduce the amount of ICU and hospital re-admissions. Furthermore, individual pre-screening will facilitate early identification of chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and other obesity related conditions. Once identified, scientifically based exercise can be prescribed to treat the chronic conditions.

POST-COVID-19 REHABILITATION AIMS TO:

  • Restore functioning to the muscles
  • Reduce the likelihood of mental health conditions that may occur due to limited mobility
  • Improve general energy and avoid malaise
  • Enable patients to return to their normal lives and activities of daily living
  • Reduce stress and improve mood
  • Improve balance and coordination
  • Reduce breathlessness
  • Improve fitness

Achieving this depends on the individual’s circumstances and stage of recovery. A biokineticist will assist you in pre-screening of comorbidities using specialised equipment, using exercise as a form of rehabilitation to strengthen your immune system and get you back on your feet and exercising after Covid-19.
