And, isn’t she just a beaut? The second phase of our Heron Community Centre upgrade was recently completed, and our board and management celebrated it by testing the new braai facilities out with a round of boerie rolls. Now, let’s take a tour of the new additions.
The Heron is our largest and, arguably, the most popular community centre on our Estate. With its 20m lap pool, adventure golf course and the Heron Pizzeria, it is a place where all sorts of gatherings take place: birthday parties, quiet meetings, sunbathing or sundowners for two.
In late 2019, the first of four phases of renovation was completed. The first phase primarily focused on upgrading the pizzeria and included an expansion of the old kitchen into what was previously a lounge area. This provided space for a second pizza oven and more room for our chefs to work. New flooring was installed, and the entrance service area were remodelled. At the time, the menu was revamped and ‘buzzers’ were introduced to alert patrons when orders were ready.
The pandemic put an unexpected spanner in the works for the continuation of the project. Our team, in partnership with Gerhard Breedt of Gerhard Architect, began construction of the second phase earlier this year.
With our Projects Supervisor Bongani Sithole at the helm, the project got underway in January. Just a few months later, we are proud of the results. The second phase upgrade includes:
The old braai areas have been replaced with larger pods with more space for communal braaing. Benches have been installed around each pod, allowing families to enjoy their chops, steaks, boerie roll (or, whatever you choose to toss onto the coals) straight off the braai.
Possibly our favourite addition! Cut into the bank, the seating pods offer a tranquil space away from the hustle and bustle of the Heron where you may enjoy your pizza, or even sit down for some quiet time. The pods provide a view of our magnificent Heron Dam.
And, if you don’t have enough time to take a seat at the pods you may take a winding walk around the front of the community centre. This pathway is wheelchair-friendly, allowing all our residents to enjoy this facility.
Thank you to our community for your patience during the construction phase. We are sure you will agree it was well worth the wait. Take a drive to the Heron and grab a coffee from Bench, or a scrumptious wood-fired pizza and enjoy the improved facilities.
